RAW: Cranbourne East shopping centre ram raid

Two men are on the run after trying to steal an ATM from a Cranbourne East shopping centre on Tuesday morning.

The would-be thieves tried to break open the ATM at the Hunt Club Village shopping centre on Linsell Blvd when they reversed a stolen white SUV into it about 3.45am, but were unsuccessful.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Adam Ferguson said the two men reversed into the shopping centre’s main entrance door before reversing into a second door to gain access to where the ATM was located.

“The two men reversed into the ATM a number of times, trying to dismount it from the ground, but were unsuccessful,” he said.

“So they put some chains around the machine and tried to tow the machine out of the shopping centre, but again were unsuccessful,” he said.

Det Acting Sen-Sgt Ferguson said the incident was “brazen to start with, and then pretty amateurish.”

“To cause approximately $100,000 damage and not steal anything, I would say it’s quite amateurish,” he said.

“(My message would be) to hand themselves in, we will find them, there’s a forensic examination of the vehicle underway and I’m confident in a short time investigators will identify who the suspects are.”

He said the stolen Nissan Dualis had been taken the night before the ram raid from an address around the corner from the shopping centre.

The stolen number plates were taken from a second car and put on the Dualis, which was found dumped in Staunton Ave.

Two attempts were unsuccessful.
