He had been having a cigarette in the car when he saw the young men approaching his property. He told police one was on a bike and all three were wearing bandannas.
One of them threatened him with a tomahawk and demanded he hand over his car keys and phone.
Another who was armed with a knife took the keys and all three crooks drove away in the victim’s car, a burnt orange late model Ford Falcon.
Somerville CIU detective Senior Sergeant Peter Drake said police would be “leaving no stone unturned” in their efforts to catch the car thieves.
“We want them off the streets as soon as possible as we believe they could be dangerous,” he said.
“Community safety is a priority for us so we are taking this extremely seriously.”
The stolen car was spotted by police on Peninsula Link near Frankston about 8.45am on January 13.
Somerville Highway Patrol pursued it for a short time but abandoned the chase after the armed crew ran red lights before burning off at high speed the wrong way down Mickleham Drive, Frankston.
The car was later found abandoned in Frankston North.
Somerville CIU is asking for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
