A Dromana meth addict who strangled her housemate in an unprovoked attack before dumping the body at a Sorrento beach has been jailed.

Nicole Boroviak was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court to a minimum of six years after she pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Joanne Martell was killed by her flatmate Nicole Boroviak.

Boroviak was on meth when she attacked her flatmate Joanne Martell on January 18, 2015.

The two women had argued before Boroviak jumped onto Ms Martell and suffocated or strangled her.

Boroviak shook Ms Martell by the shoulders before saying “she’s gone” or “she’s dead” to a shocked witness in the room at the time.

Boroviak then threatened to kill the witness and another person at the house if they did not help her conceal Mr Martell’s death. She also threatened to kill the other occupant or break their neck if they contacted police.

Boroviak dragged Ms Martell’s body into a bathroom, scrubbing it with bleach and wrapping it in a bed sheet.

She called her son to help her move the body and the pair drove to Diamond Bay, Sorrento where they began carrying Ms Martell’s body up a dirt track. However, Boroviak’s son gave up after a short distance and Boroviak carried the body about 150 metres before dumping it in scrub.

What happens in a criminal trial?

Ms Martell’s body wasn’t found until almost two years later after Boroviak’s son was arrested.

He gave police the exact location of the body and Boroviak was arrested not long after.

Ms Martell was a mother who was estranged from her two children when she was killed.

Victim impact statements from friends and family described her as a “beautiful free spirit” who had a “heart of gold”.

Her sister, Sharon Bennett, said Ms Martell had a “difficult life” but had been looking forward to spending more time with her children.

Ms Bennett described the act of violence as “having torn the fabric of their tight-knit family, severely impacting positive relationships”.

Last month Justice John Champion said the court had to “strongly denounce” the seriousness of Boroviak’s offending.

“It was a cruel course of action that deprived her loved ones from knowing what happened until years later,” he said.

“The pain and uncertainty of that period is still raw.”

He accepted Boroviak had acted spontaneously while on drugs and sentenced her to nine years’ imprisonment.

She will be eligible for parole in six years.
