Police close part of Chelsea Beach after body found
The discovery of an elderly man’s body behind shops in Chelsea is now not being treated as suspicious after police locked down the beach and the homicide squad detectives attended the scene.

Police say the death of a man in his 80s near a Chelsea beach is non-suspicious.
The homicide squad was called to investigate after the man’s body was discovered near the intersection of The Beachway and Avondale Ave at 12.30pm today.
Detectives initially said there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the death but in an update at 9pm said “at this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious”.

Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
The man’s body was found after police were called there for a welfare check.
Police temporarily locked down the beach and cordoned off nearby streets.
Concreter Paul Minehan was working nearby and said police blocked the road about 1pm. “Without knowing the circumstances, it’s tragic,” he said.

Mr Minehan said the boardwalk and nearby children’s playground was always busy around that time.
An onlooker who lives nearby said it was a shock and “not something you expect in the neighbourhood”.
