A drug trafficker turned stolen car dealer has begged a court for freedom after he was busted trying to flee the country with meth and heroin in his undies.

Frankie Zhang, 30, pleaded guilty in the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to 19 charges, including dealing with proceeds of crime and drug possession.

In the first half of the part heard guilty plea, the court heard Zhang previously spent three years behind bars from 2019 for trafficking meth and heroin.

Since his release he had a career change from drug trafficking to selling stolen cars.

Police swooped on Zhang as he was trying to flee the country with meth and heroin hidden in his boxer shorts.

Zhang was busted on June 30 in 2023, at Melbourne Airport’s international terminal with a one-way ticket to China.

After the security screening picked up a “concealed mass” in his groin area, officers found five zip-lock bags with meth and heroin hidden inside in Zhang’s underwear.

Zhang told Magistrate Martina Altman he’d tried to go to China to “get clean”, despite attempting to take a small amount of drugs with him.

“I didn’t know what else to do, I wanted to go overseas to sort myself out,” he said.

Zhang was arrested again on July 29 last year after being caught driving a car involved in an aggravated burglary from a Hawthorn property.

He told police he had sold the car for his friend for $3000, despite the car being worth $50,000.

Zhang denied any involvement with the aggravated burglary.

The court heard he used to profit from the sale to buy drugs.

Zhang pleaded guilty to charges involving the reselling of other stolen cars, including a Land Rover and a Porsche Macan with a joint value of $140,000.

At the time of his arrest, Zhang was in possession of a loaded pen pistol, meth and MDMA.

Zhang said he was trying to go to China to get help for his drug addiction.

After being deemed suitable for drug court treatment, Zhang appeared in court on Wednesday to be sentenced.

Ms Altman said still had concerns but was “prepared to take the risk”.

She said Zhang had earned himself credit with the court for “his willingness to be very real and honest” about his history.

Zhang was sentenced with conviction to 15 months imprisonment, with 194 days time served and the rest to be served in the community on a two-year drug and alcohol order.

His licence was also cancelled and disqualified for three months.
