A former highly touted football prospect turned drug dealer claimed his cocaine stash was “too difficult to sell” because of its poor quality, a court has heard.

Christian Mimmo, 27, was sentenced in the County Court on Friday to a community correction order after pleading guilty to trafficking cocaine.

Mimmo, a former captain of the Peninsula Grammar first 18 football team, was pinched with almost half a kilo of cocaine after police raided a white van at Safety Beach in July, 2021.

The court heard the police executed a search warrant on the van which was parked at Anchorage Ave.

Inside a plumbing pipe, officers found zip lock bags containing cocaine, as well as a plastic shopping bag with a ‘Louis Vuitton’ pouch, sachets labelled ‘boric acid’ and a black imitation firearm.

Fingerprints and DNA analysis led police to swoop on Mimmo who was arrested in early 2022.

Mimmo’s lawyers had previously argued the low quality of the cocaine could make it “too difficult to sell”.

But Judge Trevor Wraight dismissed the argument regarding the low purity of the drugs and said the ziplock bags indicated the cocaine had “been ready for sale”.

Mimmo, who works as a labourer after failing to complete a chef apprenticeship, did not have a previous criminal record.

The court heard he grew up in a close knit family and his parents had recently lost their business and family home.

Mimmo was convicted and handed a 30-month CCO.
