Protesters descend on Melb AGL meeting over gas terminal

THE State Government has announced an Environmental Effects Statement (EES) on the controversial floating gas terminal proposed at Crib Point.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the government owed it to residents and the community to “get it right” and ensure the proposal was thoroughly analysed.

“The EES will investigate the proposal’s effects on native vegetation, wildlife and marine life as well as Aboriginal culture areas,” he said.

If the AGL project goes ahead, liquefied natural gas (LNG) would be shipped in from interstate and overseas, converted from liquid form back into gas, then piped into the existing transportation network for AGL’s customers in southeastern Australia

The ship that stores the liquid gas would be moored at the existing jetty at Crib Point.

The gas import jetty would be connected by pipeline to an existing gas pipeline in Pakenham.

AGL spokeswoman Phaedra Deckart said Victorians were facing “real challenges with energy affordability”.

“More than 10 large commercial and industrial customers have shown their support for the project by signing Memorandum of Understandings regarding offtake agreements.

“The Crib Point LNG import jetty will be a safe and environmentally responsible project, making gas supply for Victorians more secure, while bringing much needed competition to place downward pressure on gas prices.”

The plan has sparked protests in the Western Port region with objectors, including Louise Page, arguing it will ruin the environment.
