Dozens of drivers nabbed in Springvale crackdown

A two-day road blitz in Melbourne’s southeast nabbed dozens of drivers doing the wrong thing, and a man was found dead in a Mornington house in a busy week for police.

BERWICK

A Berwick man has died in hospital after a two car crash in Officer South on Thursday November 21.

A Ford Ranger ute and a Isuzu truck collided around 4:40pm on Cardinia Rd, south of the Princes Freeway.

The driver of the ute was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died in hospital a few days later.

The 19-year-old Pakenham South driver of the Isuzu truck and a 21-year-old passenger weren’t injured in the crash.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

MORNINGTON

A man was found dead in a house in Mornington by a relative found on Sunday November 24.

The man, who was found about 7pm, is yet to be formally identified and a police spokesman said the exact cause of death was yet to be determined. A police investigation is underway.

HALLAM

Police are hunting a champagne coloured BMW they believe may be linked to a targeted Hallam shooting.

Armed Crime detectives have been told a group of men attended a Nettle Dv home about 6.10pm on October 6 and demanded entry to the property.

An altercation took place between the group and a 54-year-old Dandenong man and 34-year-old Hallam woman who were home at the time.

The Dandenong man was seriously injured after he was shot in the stomach and was taken to hospital.

“Investigators believe the incident was targeted, however are still working through possible motives for the shooting,” police spokeswoman Natalie Webster said.

A canvas of CCTV from the area has led investigators to believe a champagne-coloured BMW sedan may be linked to the shooting.

The car has distinctive Euro-style V number plates and is likely to be a 2004 to 2007 model.

Anyone with information about the BMW including its owner and current whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

NARRE WARREN, CRANBOURNE and CLYDE NORTH

Zoe Chapman has been missing for almost a week and her family have concerns about her because of a medical condition.

The 18-year-old was last seen at a licensed premise in Lauderdale Rd, Narre Warren on November 24.

Zoe is known to frequent the Cranbourne and Clyde North areas.

Investigators have released an image of Zoe in the hope that someone may have information on her whereabouts.

Anyone who sees Zoe is urged to contact Cranbourne Police Station on 5991 0600.

SPRINGVALE

Almost 30 drunk or drug drivers and a man driving down the wrong side of the Princes Highway were caught as part of a police operation in Springvale.

The two-day operation over Friday and Saturday nights on November 22 and 23 also caught 11 disqualified or unlicensed drivers, 21 unregistered vehicles and nine unroadworthy vehicles.

Four vehicles were impounded, while two arrests were also made.

Booze buses and random breath-testing sites were set up and operating between 7pm to 3am on Springvale Road, Princes Highway, Police Road and Centre Road.

The man driving down the wrong side of the Princes Highway was breath tested and returned a reading of .175.

His car was impounded and he is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and drive unregistered vehicle.

Southern Metro Region has had an additional 14 people die on their roads this year compared to last year.

ST KILDA

A man was struck by a vehicle in St Kilda on Sunday November 24 when he was trying to cross the road.

The driver failed to stop and assist the man, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened when the 30-year-old man was trying to cross the road at the intersection of Grey St and Barkly St about 11.10am.

Failing to stop, the driver of the vehicle took off on Inkerman St travelling towards Nepean Highway.

Prahran Highway Patrol members are investigating the incident and urge any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

ST KILDA

A man was assaulted and robbed while waiting for a tram on Chapel St in St Kilda in early November.

Investigators have been told the 44-year-old St Kilda man was attacked by an unknown man about 2.45pm on November 6.

The victim was struck by the offender causing him to fall to the ground.

The attacker then fled with the victim’s mobile phone.

Investigators have released CCTV and still images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The man was perceived to be of caucasian appearance, about 20-years-old, slim build, approximately 175cm tall with dark, shoulder-length hair.

It is believed several people may have witnessed the attack and investigators are eager for them to come forward.

SOMERVILLE

A man has been charged following a fatal collision in Somerville on February 25.

It is alleged a utility collided with a motorcycle on Tyabb-Tooradin Road about 4.25pm.

A motorcyclist aged in his 50s died at the scene.

A 22-year-old was charged with culpable driving causing death and appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates court.

The Warneet man was bailed to the Melbourne Magistrates court on January 24.

CLYDE NORTH

A shooting which occurred in Clyde North last month is still being investigated, with police appealing for public assistance.

Emergency services were called to Hut Rd after several shots were fired into the front of a house about 2am on October 22.

The 28-year-old occupant home at the time was uninjured.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated.

DANDENONG

A woman used an open front bedroom window to get into a Dandenong house and steal a handbag.

The handbag was stolen from the front bedroom and later dumped on the street when the woman ran off, but a credit card was kept and later used to make a number of purchases.

Some of the occupants of the Scott St property were asleep and others were in the backyard of the house at the time the women broke in.

Investigators want to talk to anyone who might have information about the incident, which happened about 6.30pm on November 19.

DANDENONG

A 13-year-old girl had her mobile phone stolen after a tug of war incident in the middle of Dandenong Plaza.

She was approached by a female of African appearance who tried to snatch the phone out of the her hand.

When the teenager fought back a tug of war ensued, before the phone was taken by the thief who then threatened to bash the younger girl.

Investigators are examining CCTV

SPRINGVALE

A man was kicked to the ground and punched by a group of thugs before his phone was stolen in Springvale on Monday November 25

The 21-year-old man from Springvale was walking along Victoria St about 9pm when he heard voices and footsteps behind him and was set upon by a group of four men of African appearance.

The man was kicked from behind and he fell to the ground before the group demanded he give them his phone.

Helpless on the ground the Springvale man threw his phone to the other side of the road, where it was retrieved by one of group after they punched and kicked him.

The group then made off towards Windsor Ave.

Investigators are appealing for witnesses.

CHELTENHAM

A scrub fire that broke out at a popular Cheltenham park and burnt an acre of land in just under an hour has been deemed suspicious.

MFB and CFA crews last night responded to calls that trees were on fire near the Park Rd oval, however strong winds meant the fire grew quickly.

The fire burnt almost one acre of land before it was declared under control after 54 minutes.

Police will attend the scene this morning to investigate the cause.
