Chelsea SES releases festive music video ‘Christmas Time Downunder’

The team behind Melbourne Storm’s theme song are back, writing an Aussie carol the Chelsea SES unit hopes will put a smile on the faces of people doing it tough this festive season. Will it be a Christmas hit?

Move over Michael Buble and Mariah Carey, Chelsea’s State Emergence Service unit has this year’s Christmas heart-warmer all wrapped up.

Not only has the group of volunteers recorded the catchy tune Christmas Time Downunder, they have a choreographed video to complement it.

Phil Wall from Chelsea SES said it was the first music video of its kind created by a unit in Australia.

Mr Wall said the team had dealt with some tragedies, such as the Mordialloc plane crash, in 2019 and hoped this music video would help spread a little Christmas cheer.

“You get a lot of people who can be down or flat or lonely at Christmas time, and we think this is a nice thing to do,” he said.

“It’s just a little something, even if it brings a smile to one person’s face that will be great.

Mr Wall joined forces with good mate Jon Mol to write the tune, and it’s their second successful collaboration, having also written the Melbourne Storm theme song.

“I think there’s a bit of irony in that, writing the Storm’s theme song, and now writing this for the SES, because of what we do with storms.”

The video, which remarkably took less than two hours to film, was shot by 17-year-old volunteer Christian Cairns.

Dance teacher Victoria Fogarty helped choreograph the video, while Trevor Almeida from Geonewmedia helped produce it.

Mr Wall said the SES could help people with just about anything – except untangling their Christmas lights.

He said while they are used to tiptoeing on rooftops in the middle of the night, when you put them on the dancefloor it’s “murder”.

“It was a great team building thing; everyone ended up getting right into it after they were a bit apprehensive at first,” he said.

“The SES theme really ended up coming through, that when something needs doing we just get on with it and do it.”

Mr Wall said his hope for everyone this Christmas was that his pager remained silent and every one was able to enjoy a safe and happy day with family and loved ones.
