Cranbourne man allegedly threw ex-girlfriend’s dog, threatened to crack her head in ice-fuelled rage

A Cranbourne man accused of going to his ex’s home, punching and choking her and telling her he was going to crack her skull then turned his anger towards her dog.

Jayson Weegink allegedly attacked his ex-girlfriend and her dog in an ice-fuelled violent rage.

An accused woman-basher who allegedly punched and strangled his ex-girlfriend and then attacked her dog has been refused bail.

Jayson Weegink is also accused of threatening to kill his former partner by smashing her head on the ground “until it cracks”.

On Thursday Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard the unemployed Cranbourne 27-year-old had been bailed in April and told not to go to the woman’s Narre Warren South home.

But on July 11 he allegedly rode his motorbike to her house and stayed there, illegally living in her garage for the next few days.

On July 14 after trying unsuccessfully to make up with her he allegedly started an argument and punched her in the face while yelling he was going to kill her.

He is then accused of picking up her dog and throwing it around the room, saying he was going to stab the animal with a knife.

When the woman tried to rescue her pet he allegedly choked her for 20 seconds until she managed to escape and run off to alert a neighbour.

Weegink rode off on his motorbike and was able to avoid being caught until a few days later when officers found him at his parent’s Cranbourne North home.

Remand liaison officer Sergeant Chris Marlow told the court the alleged victim was living in a crisis centre and police have had to feed her dogs because she was too fearful to go home.

He said Weegink should not be bailed because he posed a serious risk of reoffending against the woman and also committing dishonesty crimes to feed his substance abuse problem.

She said he would be contesting some of the charges and the delay involved in getting a hearing due to COVID-19 restrictions would be unfair.

She said he had been approved for a program to help treat his ice addiction and the 16 days he had spent on remand were “a sobering experience” for him.

Magistrate Andrew Halse said: “He remains an unacceptable risk; if he were to be released he could commit further offences and that risk cannot be mitigated by any conditions,” Mr Halse said.

Bail was refused and Weegink was remanded until August 19.
