What happens in a criminal trial?

A CRANBOURNE cat fan was not feline fine when he found out a neighbour had trapped his moggy mate, a court has heard.

He twice crept over to the other man’s yard, stole his homemade traps and then spray-painted vile slurs on his fence.

Shane Law pleaded guilty to six theft, criminal damage and trespass charges at Frankston Magistrates Court on May 31.

The court heard the dispute started in February last year when Law’s moggy went missing, and after it was located at a council pound, he found out who the trapper was.

He would wait until dark then jump the man’s fence, taking cat traps from his rear yard.

He then daubed the C-word on his gate, before following up by painting the word “P***k” on his fence.

Everything Law did had been caught on CCTV, and he was arrested.

He told police he was upset the man kept trapping his beloved pet, which had been ill.

He said he took the traps to destroy them to make sure no other cats were caught.

He said he was “very protective” of animals and was fearful cats would be killed because the neighbour was rumoured to gas birds.

But he accepted he had gone too far with the obscene graffiti, which he had done “to try and make myself feel better”.

The Dandenong forklift driver represented himself in court, saying he regretted what he had done and now kept pets inside.

Magistrate Dominic Lennon said Law had “acted in a very aggressive way” towards his neighbour when he didn’t need to.

“The alternative would have been to knock on his door and talk about it,” Mr Lennon said.

Law was given a 12-month good behaviour bond, with no conviction recorded.
