BROCCOLI lattes are now a thing, thanks to a quirky collaboration between a south east cafe and the national science agency.

Commonfolk Coffee Company has joined forces with the CSIRO and research and development corporation Hort Innovation to create the drink as part of a project to cut vegetable waste.

The latte is brewed using a powder made from broccoli florets deemed too “ugly” to sell.

Commonfolk owner Sam Keck said the fluoro green drink was an acquired taste.

“If you like broccoli you’ll like it,” he said.

“It’s like a really creamy broccoli soup.”

Since adding the brew to the Commonfolk menu the Mornington cafe has garnered global attention.

“It’s been crazy. My phone has just blown up with messages from all around the world — Germany, the US and the UK.” Mr Keck said.

“The cafe has been packed too. Mind you, only two or three people have actually ordered it!”

He said the philosophy behind the latte meshed well with Commonfolk’s own ethos.

“I understand that people look at it and think it’s hipsters gone mad,” he said.

“But for us it’s more about finding ways to reduce food waste, making farming more viable for growers and improving our diets than racking up followers on social media.”

Hort Innovation chief executive John Lloyd said the powder could also be used for smoothies, soups, baking and as a way of hiding broccoli from fussy kids in meals.

He said despite the increasing popularity of ‘superfoods’ and health and wellness, Australian diets were still poor.

“Research shows the average Australian is still not eating the recommended daily intake of vegetables a day, and options such as broccoli powder will help address this,” he said.

Commonfolk Coffee Company is at 16 Progress St, Mornington.
