Berwick man arrested following alleged 160 offences

A Berwick man has been charged with more than 160 offences after police arrested him for his involvement in two hoon gatherings in Lynbrook.

Dandenong and Springvale traffic officers tracked down the 20-year-old man after two raids in Berwick and Hallam on December 3 as part of illegal hoon driving campaign Operation Achilles.

During the raids, officers seized a silver Holden Commodore, a red and white Honda dirt bike, stolen number plates and other items.

Police allege the Commodore was used at a gathering at the intersection of Business Park Drive and Commercial Drive in Lynbrook on May 11, where it was allegedly doing burnouts.

Officers claimed they were blocked from trying to reach the Commodore after spectators surrounded their car, allowing the driver to speed off.

The motorbike was allegedly used to damage a police car when officers were breaking up another hoon meet on Business Park Drive on July 8.

Spectators were again accused of blocking officers as they tried to reach the rider.

Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said officers were “rightly sick” of the hoon behaviour and the Berwick man’s arrest was the 71st they hade made as part of the operation since July.

“We have zero tolerance for any form of high-risk driving,” he said.

“Whether you are a participant, spectator or organiser, police will continue to use all available intelligence to identify you, arrest you and charge you.

“If you choose to engage in behaviour which puts other road users at risk of serious injury, we will put you before the courts and we will ask for jail time.”

The man was charged with more than 160 alleged offences including reckless conduct, driving while suspended and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

He has been remanded to face the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on December 22.
