A popular German restaurant and bar has shut its doors at Knox Ozone.

The Bavarian, which hit the headlines last year when about 20 men performed the offensive Nazi salute at the venue, allegedly celebrating Adolf Hitler’s 134th birthday, closed its doors on December 31.

A sign on the venue says: “We want to take this chance to say dankeschon for your continued support. We’ve loved being able to give you a taste of Bavarian itself. Unfortunately Sunday December 31st 2023 is the Bavian’s Knox’s last day of trade. Again thank you and auf Wiedersehen.”

The Bavarian opened in 2017 on the former site of Bar Bosh.

It offered 17 different beers, traditional German fare, its own gelato range and a 1kg “Schnitzelmeister” challenge.

The closure of The Bavarian is the latest in a string of changes at Knox Ozone in recent years.

The iconic Irish pub and popular family restaurant Paesano, which opened in the early 2000s as one of Ozone’s original restaurants, both closed in 2019.

Lou Lou Bar and the Dragon Boat Restaurant are among the other venues to shut their doors in the precinct over the years.

New additions include The Sporting Globe, Pancake Parlour, and Urban Alley Brewery.

The former Paesano site remains empty while Japanese restaurant Oushou has opened at the former Lou Lou Bar site.

Maniax axe throwing is set to open near the Pancake Parlour this year.

Meanwhile the former site of JB Hi-Fi near the Ozone remains empty, with the popular retailer moving inside Westfield Knox during its massive upgrade.

A Westfield Knox spokesperson said: “Continuing to evolve our offer to meet the needs of the community is an important part of the Westfield customer experience and how we attract more people to our destinations.

“Over the past few months, we’ve introduced a range of new dining retailers to the Ozone, including Hunky Dory, Krabby’s Crab Boil, Oushou and One Noodle Pot, in addition to much loved favourites like Urban Alley Brewery, Fonda, and Kinn Thai and we have more to come.”
