Street Watch Whitehorse: Man carjacked and extorted at knifepoint in Burwood

A man was carjacked at knifepoint and forced to hand over thousands of dollars after he met up with a man in Burwood about selling his car. Read about that and other police incidents in Whitehorse.

A man was carjacked at knifepoint and forced to hand over thousands of dollars after he met up with a man in Burwood about selling his car.

Police are calling for witnesses to the incident, which took place in the rear carpark of a medical centre on Warrigal Rd about 6.10pm on Monday, April 1.

Police have been told the victim, a 27-year-old Box Hill man, met an associate to discuss selling his car.

The associate inspected the man’s car before he was joined by five other men.

They pushed the victim into his car and pulled out a knife, demanding he use his phone to bank transfer a large sum of cash.

The man did as he was told, before the offenders released him from the car uninjured and stole the vehicle.

The car was found in Camberwell two days later.

Five of the offending men are believed to be Asian, with the sixth being caucasian.

VERMONT SOUTH

Police chased a stolen truck all the way from the CBD to Vermont South in the early hours of Friday, April 5.

Nunwading highway patrol Sergeant said a Hino truck was taken from Elizabeth St in the city as its driver made a delivery about 1.40am.

The theft was immediately reported to police who used the vehicle’s tracking device to follow the truck as it was driven along the Eastern Freeway and to Minchinbury Drive, Vermont South.

The driver got out of the truck and ran away before he was arrested in the area shortly after. Sgt Webb said the offender was a 44-year-old man of no fixed address.

MITCHAM

Two cars full of children collided at an intersection in Mitcham on Sunday, April 7.

Sgt Webb said a 67-year-old Healesville woman was driving three children in an Isuzu station wagon when she went through a red light on Mitcham Rd at the intersection with Doncaster East Rd about 3.25pm.

The car collided into a Nissan station wagon being driven by a 33-year-old Chirnside Park man, which was also carrying three children.

No one was injured but both cars had to be towed.

Sgt Webb said the offending driver was given a fine for failing to stop at a red light.

He said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.

NUNAWADING

A P-plater was taken to hospital with a suspected broken collar bone after her car hit a tree in Nunawading on Saturday, April 6.

The 18-year-old Nunawading driver didn’t initially see an oncoming car when she went to turn out of Evandale Ave onto Springfield Rd about 1.45pm, according to Sgt Simon Webb.

He said when the driver realised she was in the path of the car she panicked and accelerated. She managed to avoid colliding with the other vehicle but instead smashed into a tree next to the intersection.

Her car was badly damaged and she was taken to Box Hill Hospital.

Sgt Webb said she would possibly receive a fine for failing to give way at an intersection.

BOX HILL

Firefighters had to be called to put out a fire in a bathroom at Box Hill Central on Tuesday, April 2.

Sgt Simon Webb said the cleaner went into the men’s toilet near the food court about 6.45pm and found the rubbish bin alight, with the fire spreading to a nearby cubicle.

Police investigated and arrested a 17-year-old Box Hill boy and a 17-year-old Doncaster boy over the incident.
