Scotty James’ old school can’t wait to welcome back the snowboarding star after he scored another Winter Olympic medal on the Beijing slopes.

Junior students at Tintern Grammar got an extra long lunch break on Friday to cheer on James as he claimed silver in the men’s half pipe, pipped by Japan’s Ayumu Hirano.

After he crashed on his first run, the Ringwood private school erupted when James put together a thrilling second run and scored 92.5, catapulting him into first place.

It’s where the 27-year-old stayed until Hirano spoiled the party with the final run of the competition, overtaking James with a score of 96.

Switzerland’s Jan Scherrer took bronze ahead of retiring US boarder Shaun White, who is widely regarded as the sport’s best rider of all time.

James’ old Tintern junior school teacher, Adam Kenny, said the school was “incredibly proud” of the triple world champion from Warrandyte, who went one better than his bronze medal at the 2018 games in PyeongChang.

Mr Kenny said James’ ability to turn around his fortunes in the middle of the competition was a great lesson for the young students to take in.

“Not only was it fantastic for Scotty, but it taught all of us that once you fall over, you bounce back up and you can still keep going.”

“The achievement of making four Winter Olympics and medalling in the last two is something which should give him an incredible sense of fulfilment.

“We are proud of what he’s achieved, but we’re more proud of the type of person he is.”

Mr Kenny said the school would host a celebration party with James, similar to his last visit in 2018, once he returned from China.
