School holidays: Fun Yarra Valley activities to entertain the kids

SO IT’S already the middle of the year and the school holidays are here again.

But just because it’s winter, doesn’t mean you need to stay inside and hibernate.

So to stop your children getting cabin fever, we’ve put together a list of fun activities happening in the Yarra Ranges from June 30 to July 15.

MARY POPPINS SINGALONG

It’s always a jolly holiday with Mary Poppins, so give your lungs a workout with singalong sessions in Healesville and Warburton. The original super nanny is bringing along all of her magical merriment for the interactive singalong at the The Memo and Upper Yarra Arts Centre.

Cost: $9 for children under 15 during midweek matinee.

DINOSAUR TIME MACHINE

Go back to prehistoric times to get up close and personal with a life-size T-Rex. Dinosaur Time Machine is great for families with children aged between three and 10. The show is a mix of science and storytelling, with information about the world of dinosaurs. Yarra Ranges will host the show at the Montrose Town Centre on Wednesday, July 4, and Upwey’s Burrinja Cultural Centre on Monday, July 9, at 11am and 2pm.

Cost: $12.

HEALESVILLE SANCTUARY

These winter school holidays the zoo is hosting its Winter Adventure. Staff are encouraging visitors to pack their gumboots, winter woollies, and enjoy open fires, Puddle Play and experiences with Wurrundjeri Elder Murrundindi.

Children are invited to head over to the Australian Wildlife Health Centre to meet Dr Hart who will be doing the rounds and helping children examine their patients at Teddy Vet Checks.

Bring your favourite plush toy along and receive a free health check. Bandage them up, learn about how the vet team care for the sanctuary’s wildlife and receive a free certificate for your brave teddy.

Cost: Children are free during the holidays.

YARRA VALLEY CHOCOLATERIE

The decadent hotspot has Junior Chocolatier classes running in July for children aged six to 12. The sessions run for 45 minutes and children learn to how make their own creations.

The cost includes a badge, chef’s hat and apron, graduation certificate plus take home three chocolate creations to enjoy. Bookings are essential.

U-PICK

If you’re looking for something a little different these holidays, Rayners Orchard’s has mandarins and Kiwi fruit ripe for the picking. The Woori Yallock farm runs tractor tours daily between 9am and 4pm at 60 Schoolhouse Rd.

Cost: $25 per person or family, children under five are free.

New York-themed festival to decorate Melbourne

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

In the digital age everyone can be a photographer, but this class teaches children the difference between a portrait and a selfie. This two-hour workshop explores the basics of portrait photography in a studio and outdoor setting with photographer Suzanne Phoenix.

The session at The Memo in Healesville on Sunday, July 8, is for children aged from nine and must bring either a smartphone, digital or SLR camera.

Cost: $25.

EASTLAND

A section of Eastland has transformed into a winter wonderland, with children invited to explore the Snowstorm Maze, trek through the frozen forest and discover snow-filled igloos on level one, outside the Commonwealth Bank, from Wednesday July 4 to 15.
