It has helped thousands of people get their musical mojo, and now a family owned music shop in Melbourne’s outer east has been named among the world’s best.
Ringwood’s Bernie's Music Land listed among the top 100 music retailers in the world by America’s National Association of Music Merchants.
It’s the only shop in Victoria to make the list and one of five in Australia, with others recognised in the US, Turkey, Singapore, Mexico and the UK.
The store nominated itself in the Best Community Retail Store category and will be presented with its award in January.
Owner Bernie Capicchiano, who has been based in Ringwood since 1990, said the honour was one of his proudest in more than 40 years of trading.
The store specialises in pianos and organs and often holds recitals, masterclasses, competitions and live performances.
“It’s pretty unique, I don’t know anywhere else in Australia that does this,” he said.
“We’ve got a great team, and we’ve been very fortunate to have the space we have to do all our programs here.”
Daughter Michelle, who also works at the store, said she was proud of her father’s ongoing contribution to the local music scene.
“He’s so generous and makes such a difference to our music community in Melbourne,” she said.
“In America the calibre of the music stores is dramatic and to be considered with our peers across the world is fantastic.”
Mr Capicchiano, who started playing piano when he was three years old, said he had no plans to slow down as he felt independent music stores were still valuable to the community.
“As long as I stay in tune, I’ll still be here,” he said.
