A pregnant mum suffered a seizure behind the wheel and slammed into a tree with her toddler in the back — the latest nightmare to hit a young Melbourne family already reeling from heartbreak.

Yarrambat mum Brittney Thompson was driving along Yan Yean Rd in Yarrambat with her 2-year-old daughter, Blake Sprague, safely strapped in the back seat when she suffered a seizure behind the wheel.

While experiencing the medical episode, the 20-week-pregnant Ms Thompson accidentally hit the accelerator, crashing into a tree at 90km/h just 100m down the road.

She was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries, while Blake was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.

Despite sustaining broken legs, ribs, facial swelling and bruising and undergoing six surgeries in 10 days, Ms Thompson has stabilised — and her unborn baby is unharmed.

Blake has also pulled through, with neck-related injuries requiring the toddler to wear a halo brace to help realign her spine.

The horror crash happened just outside Yarrambat Park Golf Course and came only six weeks after Ms Thompson’s fiance, Jordan Sprague, broke both hips in a serious motorbike crash.

Mr Sprague — the owner of Icon Aesthetic tattoo studio in Heidelberg — had only just returned to work when the family was hit by another tragedy.

He’s since halted the business and has been rotating between hospitals to care for Ms Thompson and Blake, while also managing his own recovery and his father’s illness.

Ms Thompson’s brother, Joel Thompson, said it was heartbreaking to see the “beautiful, young family” endure back-to-back traumas.

Family friend Tayla Bryant has launched an online fundraiser to help keep the couple financially afloat.

“They’re a beautiful family … Jordan would give you the shirt off his back, if you needed it, and that was the only one he had,” she said.

“I’m very grateful that everyone’s been so generous and so willing to help like a little family that is very much deserving of it.”

Mr Sprague said he was “truly blown away” by the support.

“You didn’t just give money. You gave me something far more valuable — time,” he said.

“Time to be present, to care for my family, and to give them the love and support they need from me right now. For that, I am deeply and eternally grateful.”
