A Silvan man who was out on bail while trying to break into cars using scissors has spent a night in jail before being released.
Maroondah detective Senior Sergeant Paul Cosgrove said officers visited Browns Ave, Ringwood on July 20 at 11.15pm.
Sen-Sgt Cosgrove said a 25-year-old Silvan man was confronted by a resident after he was seen trying to break into a BMW.
They had an argument before the resident called police, who then found the man in the passenger seat of the car and arrested him.
Sen-Sgt Cosgrove said the Silvan man had attempted to break in to three cars, including two BMWs and a Mazda 626.
He was remanded and faced the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court the next day, where he pleaded guilty to the attempted car thefts, attempts to steal from the cars, possession of items equipped to steal, committing an indictable offence while on bail, and breaching orders from the chief health officer.
The man was sentenced to a night in jail and released the following day.
The unrelated incident comes after a person broke into eight cars and stole various small items in three Ringwood North streets overnight on July 17.
Detectives are trying to track down the person responsible for the alleged break-ins, and anyone with information is asked to contact Ringwood police on 9871 3000.
