Lockdown is proving no deterrent for thieves in Maroondah, with cars and a home broken into on the weekend.

A Warranwood woman in her 60s had $2000 of jewellery swiped while she was sleeping during an aggravated burglary at 3am on July 18.

Maroondah detective Senior Sergeant Paul Cosgrove said the woman believed the offender got inside her Highfield Ave home through an unlocked rear door.

Sen-Sgt Cosgrove said the woman woke up on Sunday morning to find several pieces of jewellery stolen from a handbag in her front bedroom.

He said police were continuing their investigations into the incident and would be assessing CCTV footage and speaking to neighbours.

Meanwhile, Ringwood North residents have been urged to lock up their cars after a person broke into eight cars overnight in the suburb, including six in the one street.

Sen-Sgt Cosgrove said the break-ins occurred between 5pm on July 17 and 10am on July 18 based on reports from victims.

He said six cars were broken into along Lockhart Rd, along with one each in nearby Goldsmith Ave and Melview Drive.

Sen-Sgt Cosgrove said each car was unlocked and police suspected the string of break-ins “indicates an offender is walking round in the middle of the night, trying car doors”.
He said items including loose change, a mobile phone, wallets and purses were taken from some of the cars.

Anyone with information or CCTV footage regarding the two incidents is encouraged to phone Maroondah detectives on 9871 3000.
