AN intersection labelled by locals as ‘dangerous’ in The Basin near primary schools and retirement villages will get an overhaul under a new plan announced by the opposition.
Bayswater District MP Heidi Victoria announced the commitment on Friday, alongside local mum Paige Kennett, who led a petition late last year calling for the crossing.
Ms Kennett, a mother of three, said she thought a crossing on Forest Road, near Wright Street, was warranted because there are multiple schools and young families in the area.
“There is no safe place to cross,” she said.
“I’d like my children to be able to safely walk to and from school and having this dangerous intersection discourages that.”
After her concerns initially fell on deaf ears, Ms Kennett started a petition and together with MP Victoria, got nearly 500 signatures.
The community support was overwhelming, Ms Kennett said.

I honestly thought that maybe the community need for it was too small but I guess people power works.”
The Basin community will get the new signalled pedestrian crossing if there is a change of Government in November, Liberal MP Heidi Victoria said.
“I’m pleased to announce that if there is a change of Government in November, a new pedestrian crossing will be installed, to help people stay active with safety,” Ms Victoria said.
“Paige has done a wonderful job of identifying a community need, taking action, and finding a way to get it done.”
The Basin Primary School principal Graeme Russell said the local community are right behind the idea.
“It is clearly a busy intersection and as it currently stands, remains to be a real safety issue,” Mr Russell said.
