A post on the Upper FTGully Foothills Society Facebook page said: “The old barber shop in Upper Ferntree Gully is being transformed into a takeaway food outlet and it may be the last opportunity to see some fine examples of the sign craftsman’s art before this stunning workmanship is hidden from view forever.
“It’s a shame it can’t be preserved, it’s beautiful work.” The post attracted more than 90 comments and was shared more than100 times.
In a statement, the Upper FTGully Foothills Society said it would be awesome if the art could be displayed or at least preserved behind a new wall.
Sherbrooke Foothills Society secretary Robert Jungwirth also called for the signs to be saved.
“These advertising signs are remarkably well preserved and are fine examples of the artwork of their time, executed by artisans when advertising was painted by hand directly to the walls,” Mr Jungwirth said.
“There are very few older commercial buildings surviving in the district, and none with such exquisite examples of the advertisers’ art.”
Knox Leader was unable to contact the new owner of the store.
