From The Castle to Crackerjack, check out some of the best films shot in Victoria.
THE CASTLE
Who can drive past Bonnie Doon without singing the famous line from The Castle, recently voted Australia’s favourite film.
Darryl Kerrigan’s “castle” was actually a home in Dagonet St, Strathmore, which has now been moved to Beechworth.
Other memorable scenes were shot in Toorak, Brunswick and Essendon and Melbourne airports.
CHOPPER
Filming of the cult 2000 classic about criminal turned author Mark Brandon ‘Chopper’ Read, starring Eric Bana, took place in the old Pentridge Prison and Jika Jika before it was demolished to become apartments.
THE WOG BOY
Chasers Nightclub in Chapel St plays a starring role in the hit 2000 film The Wog Boy, starring Nick Giannopoulos and Vince Colosimo. Filming of Wog Boy 3 now underway, with scenes being shot in Fitzroy, Brighton and Wheelers Hill.
CRACKERJACK
Melbourne Bowling Club in Windsor was the major location site for the 2002 comedy Crackerjack, starring Mick Molloy, Judith Lucy and Bill Hunter.
THE CLUB
Featuring an all-star cast, including Jack Thompson, it doesn’t get much more Melbourne than 1980 hit The Club, described by the Herald Sun’s Leigh Paatsch as “a terrific tale of boardroom bloodletting and player-coach conflict”.
RIDE LIKE A GIRL
The 2019 film starring Teresa Palmer as Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne showcases a number of Victorian locations, including Ballarat, Sunbury, Macedon Ranges, Jan Juc and the Moonee Valley, Hanging Rock and Flemington racecourses, according to the VicScreen website.
THE DRY
Based on Jane Harper’s award-winning novel, The Dry was filmed in Victoria’s Mallee and Wimmera regions.
The team behind the box office hit have reunited for new movie Force of Nature, with filming taking place in the Dandenong Ranges.
THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER
The Man from Snowy River became a box office hit when it was released in 1982.
Starring Sigrid Thornton and Tom Burlinson, it boosted tourism to the Victorian alpine region.
PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK
The 1975 feature Picnic at Hanging Rock, directed by Peter Weir, remains a classic and was shot at the famous rock formation in the Macedon Ranges.
MAD MAX
The 1979 classic starring Mel Gibson was shot in and around Melbourne over 12 weeks, on a budget of less than $400,000.
