A Mooroolbark mum is pleading for help after being stuck in the US away from her daughter, who is on the autism spectrum, for more than five months.

Terrianne Guy has been struggling to get home to her 16-year-old daughter for five-and-a-half months, who she says is suicidal while having to cope with Victorian Stage 4 restrictions and not having her mother around for five and a half months.

The mum has had two flights cancelled with the second in July 18 capped at only 30 passengers and business class passengers prioritised — and because both flights were booked through a third party she was not able to get refunds.

Now she’s thousands of dollars out of pocket and trying to raise enough money for a business class flight to get her home through a GoFundMe page.

To make matters worse the beauty salon she owns had to be shut down by her staff while she had been out of the country, and the State Government has stopped her coronavirus payments because she has been out of the country for more than six weeks.

“I contacted the Australian Embassy and they said to contact US Home Affairs, and then US Home Affairs told me to contact the Australian Embassy,” she said.

“We have tried everything and I’ve been here five and a half months.”

Ms Guy travelled to Arizona with her husband Rob on a two-week business trip in March when the coronavirus pandemic exploded and the Virgin Australia flight she was supposed to take on March 23 did not fly.

But because she has fibromyalgia — an auto-immune disease — US doctors advised the Aussie not to travel as the virus could kill her.

Despite this both Mrs Guy and her husband became extremely ill and after being advised to get tested only Mr Guy’s came back positive for coronavirus.

She said her chest pain was excruciating and while having more symptoms than her husband, including complete loss of taste and smell, even a second test came back negative.

“It was hell,” she said.

“My body and chest were so painful.”

Mrs Guy said it took a month to recover, and despite feeling exceptionally drained, the pair drove six hours to LAX airport, only to be told they were only taking 30 business class and no economy passengers.

“Now my US visa has expired and they had already given me 30 extra days to June 5,” she said.

“I’m very depressed … and my daughter is suicidal.”

Mrs Guy said she was talking to her daughter every day and helping with her remote learning via video chat.

“Sometimes we just have it on to be in the same room together,” she said.

An Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman said the department stood ready to provide consular assistance to any Australian citizen, should they request it.
