A teenage girl was stalked by a creep moments before being sexually assaulted at a bus stop in Montrose.

The 19-year-old woman was walking along Canterbury Rd when the man started following the teen as she crossed at the Mt Dandenong Rd traffic lights about 5.50am on March 4.

Victoria Police media officer Alex Day said the man sat next to the victim at the bus stop and started talking to her before assaulting the teen.

Mr Day said the victim stood up to move away and the man lunged at her before she pushed him away.

He said a female motorist pulled up to check on the woman, which scared the man off and he ran away down Mr Dandenong Rd.

The man is described as caucasian, 188cm, with a solid build, brown hair and a stubble beard.

He was wearing plain dark grey tracksuit pants and a plain black hoodie.
