More than 30 police, including what’s believed to be members of the Special Operations Group, swarmed Mt Evelyn after reports of a man in the area armed with a gun.

Among a large group of police officers gathered near the intersection of Swansea Rd and Francis Crescent the Leader saw between eight to 10 officers in tactical gear, who appeared to be from the Special Operations Group — who were later seen leaving the scene in black, unmarked Ford 4WDs, before 6pm on Sunday.

Police initially blocked traffic heading towards Lilydale at the intersection of Swansea and York roads.

Locals reported an armed man was seen in the area near Birmingham and Swansea roads.

Victoria Police Senior Constable Alistair Parsons confirmed police were called to Mt Evelyn following a report of a man possibly armed with a firearm.

“Local and specialist police attended the vicinity of Swansea Rd and conducted a search for the man about 5.45pm,” Sen-Constable Parsons said.

“Police were unable to locate anyone matching the man’s description.”

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
