A Lilydale man had a rude awakening when crooks allegedly broke into a house, which was for sale, while he slept.

The man managed to frighten off crooks who police allege got into the Ajax Court house sometime in the early hours of the morning in late August.

Yarra Ranges detective Senior Sergeant Paul Anderson said police raided three properties in Montrose, Lilydale and Ferntree Gully on September 9, which led to three arrests related to the aggravated burglary.

Sen-Sgt Anderson said a 31-year-old Ferntree Gully man was remanded in custody on nine charges including aggravated burglary, burglary, theft, weapons and family violence offences.

A 35-year-old Montrose man was charged with handling stolen goods and will appear in court at a later date.

A woman was let go pending further police inquiries.
