An alleged fugitive is in custody after a dramatic arrest involving capsicum spray in Wantirna.
Croydon detectives raided a Tilba Place property and allegedly found Denham Mumford hiding out in the backyard bungalow at 3.30pm on September 7.
Sergeant Ell McGibbony said Mr Mumford allegedly tried to resist arrest and police used pepper spray to subdue the man.
The 29-year-old had allegedly been on the run from police for a week after officers tried to stop the man during a routine coronavirus Stage 4 lockdown patrol on Vuegrande Rise in Montrose on August 31.
Sgt McGibbony said police had been patrolling an address in the street “known to be problematic” for coronavirus lockdown breaches when officers tried to stop the driver of a black Holden Commodore station wagon.
Sgt McGibbony said the driver refused to stop and instead allegedly attempted a quick three-point-turn, smashing into a sign.
He said an officer has then attempted to get into the man’s car by breaking the driver’s side window, when the driver has driven off.
Sgt McGibbony said the officer’s arm was torn up with multiple cuts and he had to be taken to hospital, where he had about 15 pieces of glass surgically removed from his arm and stitches.
A warrant was issued for Mr Mumford arrest for reckless exposure of police officer to risk by driving.

He appeared at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court this afternoon for a brief administrative hearing where a date for a contest mention was set for October 5.
