The owner of a unique and very old photo album might not even know its missing, Yarra Ranges police believe.
Detectives are trying to find who owns the possibly valuable item which could predate World War II, after it was discovered during a raid on an outer east property recently.
Leading Senior Constable Sven Eagles said the album was very large at about 50 by 60cm and was also heavy.
Sen-Constable Eagles said the photos inside also appeared to be quite old and taken at a time when cameras had slow shutter speeds, which gave a ghosting image as people walked out of shot.
The album, which came in an ornate wooden box, which Sen-Constable Eagles said was worn but appeared to be crafted with skill and has dovetailed edging.
He said the photographs inside were not personal – not of family – and detectives hoped someone might recognise the ornate monogram on the album’s cover.
Sen-Constable said the owner might not even know the album was missing if it had been stored in a shed.
“It could be owned by someone who doesn’t use social media,” Sen-Constable Eagles said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact detective Senior Constable Leigh Kellett on 9739 2401.
