A Mooroolbark man who punched a security guard outside a sushi shop at Lilydale Marketplace has been described by his lawyer as a longtime heroin addict.

Jason Allan, 46, pleaded guilty to charges from three matters at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on March 8, including the assault of the security guard on August 3, 2019.

The court heard Allan was spotted by a security guard he had previously had “dealings” with, who asked him to leave and tried to escort him out of the centre.

When they had reached the Sushi Hub store, Allan turned around and punched his victim in the face three times, before the guard managed to restrain him and contacted police, who later arrested him.

In other incidents, the court heard Allan attacked a person in a grey Holden Commodore on Dorset Rd in Croydon on July 16, 2021.

Allan believed the car belonged to his late mother, and the duo got into a fight before Allan was punched several times, pushed away and left the scene.

A couple of months earlier, he randomly jumped on the bonnet of a blue Mazda parked outside a BWS bottle shop on Main St, Lilydale on May 2.

He walked towards Lilydale Marketplace where he was spotted by police and arrested.

Allan’s defence lawyer said his client had previously had a heavy drug addiction, starting on cannabis before he “graduated to heroin and became a heroin addict”.

But the defence lawyer said Allan had taken steps to turn his life around in recent months, saying he hadn’t consumed drugs for nine months, with the exception of the occasional puff of cannabis.

“Things are going better for him than they have for a long while, and attributes that to the healthier lifestyle he’s living,” the defence lawyer said.

Magistrate Tony Parsons ordered Allan be assessed for a community corrections order immediately and adjourned the matter to return to the court on Thursday.
