Jacob Parish pleads guilty to careless driving after first trying to pin the blame on Mum

A 22-year-old P-plater hoon told police he was living the dream and loved lording his high-powered V8 ute over his mates until he lost control in wet conditions and smashed it into another car. But find out who he tried to blame it on.

Jacob Parish told police he was lucky he didn’t kill someone after he lost control and swerved across three lanes of traffic in Boronia in July last year.
Jacob Parish told police he was lucky he didn’t kill someone after he lost control and swerved across three lanes of traffic in Boronia in July last year.

A 22-year-old P-plate hoon said he was living the dream and his friends thought he was a “sick c — ” until he lost control of his high-powered V8 Commodore ute in wet conditions and smashed it into another car, a court has heard.

Jacob Parish pleaded guilty at the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on February 12 to careless driving, not displaying P-plates and driving a probationary prohibited vehicle following the crash on Mountain Highway, Boronia, last year.

Leading Senior Constable Sarah Logan told the court Parish was turning left off the highway onto Boronia Rd at 70km/h when he lost control on the slippery road surface and skidded across three lanes of traffic, mounted the centre median strip and struck the side of another car.

Knowing he was not supposed to be driving the car as a probationary driver, Leading Sen-Constable Logan told the court Parish tried to provide his mother’s details to the other driver so he could pin the crash on her, resulting in the other driver calling police.

Parish told police the car was his but registered in his mum’s name and he wasn’t displaying P-plates at the time of the crash to avoid police pulling him over for a licence check, Leading Sen-Constable Logan told the court.

He also told police he loved lording the car over his jealous mates, who only drove V6 cars in accordance with the law, she said.

“I’m living your dreams and everyone else’s dreams, none of youse (sic) have one and I do,” he said according to court documents.

“I own this car and all my mates own a V6 and they go, ‘f — k you’re a sick c—’.”

Leading Sen-Constable Logan also told the court Parish admitted he was lucky he hadn’t killed someone and he shouldn’t have been taking the turn that fast.

Magistrate Tim Walsh said Parish acted in a “conniving way” by choosing not to display P-plates to evade police detection and the crash demonstrated why probationary drivers shouldn’t drive high-powered cars.

“If someone had been killed you would have been in the dock of the County Court wondering ‘is the judge going to put me away for five, six or seven years’? Mr Walsh said.

“A driver’s licence is a privilege, no one has the right to drive. The community gives you the right to drive a motor vehicle and with that right comes rules.”

Mr Walsh ordered Parish pay a $2000 fine without conviction.

Mr Walsh made no orders against Parish’s licence after Parish’s lawyer told the court a loss of licence would result in him losing his job as a carpenter’s apprentice.
