Living in the eastern suburbs significantly lowers the chance you will be victim to one of the home burglaries that happen every 20 minutes across Victoria — unless you live in one of 11 suburbs.
According to RACV analysis of Victoria Police crime statistics, houses in Clayton, Notting Hill, Chadstone, Holmesglen, Templestowe, Park Orchards, Wonga Park, Mt Dandenong, Sherbrooke, Silvan and Tremont are more likely to be burgled than the average home.
While one in 91 homes across the state were burgled during the 12-months to June 30, one in 57 homes in Mt Dandenong and Sherbrooke were robbed.
Yarra Ranges’ suburb Tremont recorded the worst odds in the east — one in 29 homes robbed — but only had a population of 77 as of the 2016 census.
Meanwhile, Mt Evelyn came out as the suburb with the best odds — where only one in 351 homes was preyed on.
Mooroolbark came in second best, with one in 230.
But Lilydale police Acting Senior Sergeant Brendon De Schwartz said it was difficult to explain the variation in statistics between suburbs, with a number of factors at play.
He said the rate of burglaries could depend on an offender’s preferences, such as whether they chose to offend in an area convenient for them, and where the police had been visibly patrolling, opposed to meeting with people more discretely.
He said the number of cars parked in an area and whether victims chose to report crimes could also affect results.

He said people wanting to prevent a burglary should lock doors and windows and not to leave valuables visible in cars, which could encourage offenders to there were more valuables inside the house.
Acting Sen-Sgt De Schwartz said CCTV was always helpful if people could afford it, and advised people to regularly take in their mail.
“If junk mail is hanging out of the mailbox it gives the idea no one is present,” he said.
