A rare Holden Monaro, stolen from a Ringwood garage in June, has been recovered in Truganina.

The distinctive 1974 orange Monaro GTS, worth $100,000, was stolen from a carport in Ringwood’s Turnbull Court sometime between June 3 and 4, despite being clamped and not used for months.

Coburg’s Con Panopoulos said the car was owned for 22 years by his son Nicholas, who died last November.

“It’s sentimental and means a lot to us … it represents our son and it’s our way of remembering him,” he told Leader earlier this year.

Last week officers from Maroondah crime investigation unit had a breakthrough in the case, recovering the car from a property in Truganina.

Detective Senior Constable Paul Cosgrove said another allegedly stolen car, a Toyota Hi Lux worth $50K, was also recovered.

He said a 32-year-old Melton man was arrested and charged with two counts of handling stolen goods.

He was released on bail to appear in court next April.

Nicholas’ brother-in-law David Makris said it was great to hear the car had been recovered.

“Nick loved his car, it was everything to him,” he said.

Mr Makris said before Nick died he wanted to sell the Monaro and donate the money to a charity such as Beyond Blue or Lifeline, and Mr Makris hoped that wish was now fulfilled.
