Police have been left amazed four people were able to get up and run from a crash in Heathmont that destroyed two cars.
Police called in helicopters and two dog units to help find the offenders, who remain on the run.
Maroondah highway patrol Sergeant Michael Aston said a stolen Audi slammed into the back of a white sedan parked on the street outside 291 Canterbury Rd about 1am.
He said passers-by and nearby residents told police they then saw four people running from the Audi.
Sgt Aston said he was “absolutely” surprised they were able to run away considering the damage to the cars.
“They were very lucky,” he said.
He said he expected at least one of them would have been injured.
Police checks of nearby hospitals failed to turn up any of the offenders.
