A tragic accident on Saturday night out with mates has left a 20-year-old Laurimar Football Club player fighting for his life at The Alfred.
Doreen man Harry Mooney was walking to the Yarrambat Golf Club with a group of mates along Yan Yean Rd when he was clipped by a car resulting in a brain injury.
“He’s just a happy kid. He’s really well loved by his friends and family. He’s got a core group of mates and a long term girlfriend and they are all just devastated,” Harry’s cousin Sophie Abbatangelo told the Herald Sun.
“Everyone loves him, what you see is what you get with him.”
Harry remains in the ICU in an induced coma as doctors wait to assess the extent of his brain injury and what that means going forward for Harry and his family.
Ms Abbatangelo has set up a GoFundMe to help ease the families financial burden during this tough time.
The fundraiser has been wildly successful so far, raising more than $50k in 48 hours.
“A lot of people know him and love him. And not just him but the whole family,” Ms Abbatangelo said.
Even so, the family had no idea it would be so successful.
“We had no idea it would go so far over target,” Ms Abbatangelo said.
“Everyone knows living expenses are through the roof. Tickets, accommodation and food - it all adds up so it is all about alleviating some of that pressure so the family can just focus on Harry.”
