Footage of Kalman Drive, Boronia accident emerges, two men remain in critical condition

The shocking moment a car mounts a kerb and crashes through a tree before slamming into another, ripping in half, has been captured on CCTV as two men remain fighting for life in hospital.

Boronia crash footage

Shocking footage has emerged of the high speed, single-car crash that tore a tree in half at a Boronia industrial estate and left two men in hospital fighting for life.

Two men remain in a critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital more than a week after the Kalman Drive accident, which left the Holden sedan ripped open and wrapped around a tree on January 25.

A 51-year-old driver and his 31-year-old passenger, both from The Basin, were rushed to hospital after the accident happened about 7.40pm.

Victoria Police major collisions unit detectives are still investigating the incident.

The video shows a white Holden sedan travelling down the road before it mounts the kerb and travels along the nature strip, smashing through a tree, spinning and hitting a second tree before coming to a stop.

A bystander is seen rushing into the vision and grabbing his phone to contact what Leader understands are the emergency services.

Knox Leader visited the industrial estate and spoke to some of the workers at the Kalman Drive businesses who said hooning was an issue in the area.

One worker, who did not want to be named, said in the several years he had worked in the estate he was aware of people hooning — some brazenly doing it during the day.

While another worker said every Monday morning was rubber tyre marks down the road.

Boronia Acting Sergeant Daniel Yeoman said hooning was a known issue in some industrial estates throughout Knox.

Acting Sgt Yeomans said Kalman Drive, Barry St and parks in Rowville previously had issues.

He said hoons liked bowl courts to perform doughnuts and burnouts, but liked straight roads for drag racing.

Knox highway patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Dave Young said hooning around industrial estates was hard to police and encouraged people living or working nearby to report anything they saw, including tyre marks.

Acting Sen-Sgt Young said hooning operations were often intelligence-driven and once someone had been identified during an incident, their details were kept on file.

“If we get information on any activity we can put more patrols on,” he said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
