Eastern Health lags on Maroondah Hospital car park in Ringwood East

EASTERN Health is yet to finalise a raft of necessary arrangements and building permits for its new multi-deck carpark at Maroondah Hospital.

EASTERN Health is yet to finalise a raft of necessary arrangements and building permits for its new multi-deck carpark at Maroondah Hospital.

But the hospital claims construction is set to begin on the $13 million project this month.

The new carpark will have more than 500 spaces and is designed to ease more than a decade of parking woes in streets surrounding the hospital. It is being built on top of an existing 100-space staff carpark on Grey St, with staff urged to do carpooling, have meetings at other sites and use public transport where possible.

Eastern Health spokesman Zoltan Kokai also said arrangements had been made for temporary staff parking at East Ringwood Reserve, 1km from the hospital.

But in a statement, Maroondah Mayor Nora Lamont said there had only been “preliminary discussions” and the deal was yet to be finalised.

She said the council was yet to receive an application for a construction zone permit or a traffic management plan for the project.

Signs at the carpark last week said its closure had been postponed until further notice due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

Grey St’s Jan Bell, who has lived in her home since the 1970s, feared there would be further congestion in the already-busy street during construction.

“It will be a nightmare,” she said.

“I feel sorry for all these people who use the hospital, they are going to have all these headaches before they come here.”

Mr Kokai said the hospital appreciated “the understanding of our staff, volunteers, patients and visitors regarding carparking capacity during construction”.

A two-hour pay-and-display system for on-site parking on Grey St is also being introduced while the carpark is being built.

The carpark is being funded through a $2 million grant from the Federal Government, with Eastern Health borrowing the remainder from the State Government’s Treasury Corporation of Victoria.
