A man remains in a critical condition in hospital after he was hit by a van on a major road in pitch black conditions in Melbourne’s outer east.

According to the Eyewatch – Maroondah Police Service Area Facebook page, the man was hit on Dorset Rd about 4.10am on November 21, between Burgess Rd in Bayswater North and The Gateway in Croydon South, near the Merrindale shops.

Knox highway patrol Senior Constable Daniel Seath said a 38-year-old Blackburn man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to The Alfred hospital for treatment.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear.

Sen-Constable Seath said the driver of the van, a 27-year-old Keysborough man, stopped and assisted police at the scene, as did a taxi driver.

Nobody has been charged over the incident as police are still continuing their investigations.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is asked to phone Knox highway patrol officers on 9881 7900 or Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
