Burger lovers in the outer east are in luck, with a new restaurant opening its doors in Boronia.
Dhanushka Marasingha has opened District North Kitchen in Boronia Junction shopping centre, selling burgers, his own unique take on snack packs featuring chicken schnitzel bites and “cake shakes”, where sweet tooths can enjoy a whole slice of cake in a milkshake.
Mr Marasingha operates two popular District North Kitchen restaurants in Darwin, and wanted to bring the brand to Melbourne.
Described as the Top End’s most popular burgers, foodies visiting the Boronia store can choose from a range of beef and chicken options, including the popular Full Boyle (named in honour of Brooklyn Nine-Nine character Detective Charles Boyle).
The burger features two smashed beef patties, cheese, Captain Morgan rum barbecue sauce, caramelised onion, bacon and pickle.
Mr Marasingha said the Fried Chook burger had also been popular with Boronia customers.
The menu also features burgers named after a line from Friends and a Backstreet Boys’ song.
Mr Marasingha said the restaurant used its own blend of mince to create the burgers, and fresh herbs to make their own sauces.
They also make their own chicken schnitzel and fried chicken, with all chicken marinated for 24 hours before it is crumbed or battered.
Mr Marasingha said they were the only business serving the unique snack packs, which have been a big hit with Darwin customers.
The Schnitty Snack Pack includes chicken schnitzel bites, garlic mozzarella cheese sauce and chips, DNK house sauce and rum barbecue sauce.
Mr Marasingha is originally from Sri Lanka and moved to Melbourne 13 years ago to study cookery.
Before opening his restaurants his last job was working as a cleaner across the road from where he now has his Boronia shop.
He hopes to open more stores in Melbourne, possibly in the western suburbs next.
“We are the first Darwin-based restaurant to come to Melbourne or any other state,” he said.
“In Darwin we have a laid back atmosphere and we want to create that same atmosphere here.”
District North Kitchen Boronia is at 3/91A Boronia Road (next to The Cheesecake Shop).
