Westfield drive-through shopping service launches at Doncaster, Knox and Fountain Gate

Drive-through food has arrived at three major shopping centres in Melbourne’s east, with staff delivering items from popular restaurants and cafes to your car. And there’s plans to extend it to other retailers. Here’s what you can get.

Westfield is taking on food delivery giants such as UberEats and MenuLog with a drive-through pick-up service at its shopping centres across Melbourne’s east.

Operators Scentre Group have launched Westfield Direct, allowing shoppers to order food from their favourite outlets and restaurants at Westfield Doncaster, Westfield Knox and Westfield Fountain Gate.

Shoppers can order items from multiple outlets though a dedicated website for each centre and pay for them in advance.

They can then drive to the centre, collect their orders from a contactless collection point and have their items loaded into the car by staff.

Shoppers can order from around 20 outlets at each centre, including Westfield Doncaster favourites Dumpling Alley, TGI Fridays and PappaRich and Westfield Knox’s Carls Jr, San Churro and The Sporting Globe.

Cafes, bakeries, juice and tea and seafood shops are also involved including Woodfrog Bakery and Koko Black at Doncaster and Royal Donuts and Fisch at Knox.

Westfield Fountain Gate has 24 outlets taking part including Bakers Delight, The Pancake Parlour, Courtyard Café and Adriatic Continental Deli.

Westfield Knox San Churro manager Bharat Singh, whose business is near one of the collection points, said his store had returned to regular trading hours following the launch of Westfield Direct.

Mr Singh said his usual trade had decreased by 80 per cent due to coronavirus restrictions and he hoped the service would provide a boost.

“It’s starting to trickle in, any extra business coming in is always helpful,” he said.

“People love to come in and sit and have a hot chocolate with family and friends and we can’t do that right now.

“Being right in front of the outlet will help us out and hopefully people will look at it when they get their orders and hopefully get some churros as well.”

Scentre Group Victorian regional manager Charlie Rimmer said the service would expand in the coming weeks to offer non-food retailers at the centres.

“Westfield Direct is a new innovation, fast-tracked to offer customers a safe and easy way to shop for their everyday needs from their local Westfield centre,” he said.

“The feedback from our customers and retail partners has been extremely positive so far and we remain focussed on expanding and adapting the Westfield Direct offer to meet their needs.”
