Two men in rather eyebrow-raising outfits who allegedly nicked a PSO’s hat while out celebrating Halloween have handed it in, hours after pictures of the dressed-up duo were splashed on social media.

Police released an image of two men dressed up as a French maid and the Queen of Hearts on social media on Monday morning, following the incident at Boronia railway station on October 30 about 7pm.

Eastern transit police Sergeant Simon Waterhouse said a PSO took off his hat, put it down on the station concourse and had gone to tend to other matters.

He returned to find it had disappeared, leading to police checking CCTV and noticing the two men passing through the station.

Sgt Waterhouse said the two men, believed to be in their 20s, handed in the hat to Boronia police station about 10.45am on Monday, shortly after they were made aware of the appeal.

“Fortunately it was a warm night and he (the PSO) didn’t get cold,” Sgt Waterhouse said.

“Even though it’s a hat, it has the branded police logo on it, so it’s taken quite seriously.”

Many followers of the Eyewatch – Knox Police Service Area Facebook page had a chuckle when they saw the post.

Matthew Clark wrote: “Queen clearly dazzled the officer and the maid made the clean get away,” Tamara Vogel thought the incident was “gold”, while Imogen Wilkinson was “curious to know whether the cop was seduced out of the uniform or not”.

Matty Arnold said: “The maid was just doing her job, if you don’t want them taking your laundry, you’re meant to hang one of those signs on your door”.

Sgt Waterhouse said police were continuing their investigations and that no charges have been laid.
