While I could have ordered the loaded cheese and bacon fries or the chilli cheese fries, I was here on a mission.
Gravy and chips.
The Cheese and Gravy Fries come out steaming hot with the right balance of fries, cheese sauce, beef gravy, along with a sprinkle of fresh spring onions.
For just $10 I found the portion size was perfect to have stand-alone or to share with a mate while you both tackle a burger or hot dog.
These are a must try when stumbling around Footscray.

The Hot Bird
Cheltenham and Carnegie
Chip connoisseurs have given the big tick of approval to the tasty chippies on offer at The Hot Bird.
Owner Alan Cook said the key component to making awesome chips was the oil.
“We filter the oil daily and we change the oil weekly,” he said.
“I think that’s a real key component for fresh chips.
“Also we cook to order, we don’t hold hot chips.
“People really like the fact they’re hot; big serves and they’re crunchy.”
The stores also offer gravy on their chips and a loaded chips option, with cheese, bacon, spring onions, and a special sauce which is incredibly popular.
There’s also a spicy loaded chips option with jalapeños.
But it is the businesses HSP (halal snack pack) that is probably the most popular item on the menu.
The super fresh option allows customers to tuck into the store’s famous chips covered with chicken and sauces.
Gravy Spot

Gravy Spot in Ballarat Central is seldom quiet of an evening, with crowds often forming as patrons satisfy late-night cravings.
Co-owner Aziz said a night out was “not complete” without chips and gravy from the Lydiard St shop.
“We are known for the gravy,” he said.
“Pretty much when people go out, they’re like, ‘Okay, let’s meet up in front of Gravy Spot or inside Gravy Spot.
“It’s an icon: it’s been serving here for over 18 years and nobody can match our chips and gravy.
“The gravy formula that we have, it’s a very special recipe, no one else can make it.”
Dunkirk Ave Fish & Chips
32 Dunkirk Ave, Shepparton
Head on down to Dunkirk Ave, Shepparton to try one of the town’s best chips and gravy.
Shop owner Henry Liu said they cook crunchy chips for their customers and when making gravy it can’t be too thick or runny.
“Needs to be just right and hot – and chicken salt is the best I reckon. Lots of customers prefer chicken salt on their chips too,” Mr Liu said.
He said the amount of visitors he gets daily varies.
“Some customers just come to us and order some chips as the side of their meal at home,” he said.
“But we’ve experienced a shortage of frozen potato product and unfortunately it continues at this stage.
“We wouldn’t know what brand we would get from our suppliers from every delivery but we are doing our best to find good sources of good chips.”
Mr Liu said the shop has been getting a lot of “big support” from the local community.
“It’s been a hard time for business like us. All the cost of basic things like chips, fish, oil and pretty much everything has gone up significantly and with their help we are just trying to make the ends meet,” Mr Liu said.
“There’s something special we make in the shop which is battered chips. It’s not everyone’s thing but people from far away would travel to us and buy battered chips.
“I really like eating battered chips too, but the problem is it takes more time and work to make it. So we hope customers can understand we can’t really do it when it’s peak time especially on Friday nights.”
