Bayswater North: Camels escape from Circus Royale Australia

Just when we all thought the world couldn’t get any stranger, a group of Knox highway patrol officers found themselves chasing a prey of a different sort.

Shocked motorists found a flock of camels dangerously close to a major eastern suburbs road last night after they escaped from a circus.

Police were called about 9.30pm after two runaway camels were seen close to the corner of Dorset and Canterbury roads in Bayswater North.

Three police units then took up search for the large animals, locating them almost half an hour later, Maroondah highway patrol Sergeant Michael Aston said.

Sgt Aston said police came across the escapees just after circus staff did.

The camels were found eating blackberries on vacant land about 100m from the road.

Sgt Aston said the incident was definitely a first for the highway patrol.

It turned out the camels went walkabout after the fence in their pen was broken, wandering almost 1km from where they were first reported.

Touring circus company Circus Royale Australia was based at 640 Dorset Rd, Bayswater North.

Knox Leader tried to contact Circus Royale Australia for comment.

A post on their Facebook page last week revealed the circus was closing because of COVID-19, with staff focusing on taking care of their animals
