Shocked motorists found a flock of camels dangerously close to a major eastern suburbs road last night after they escaped from a circus.
Police were called about 9.30pm after two runaway camels were seen close to the corner of Dorset and Canterbury roads in Bayswater North.
Three police units then took up search for the large animals, locating them almost half an hour later, Maroondah highway patrol Sergeant Michael Aston said.
Sgt Aston said police came across the escapees just after circus staff did.
The camels were found eating blackberries on vacant land about 100m from the road.
Sgt Aston said the incident was definitely a first for the highway patrol.
