Detectives are set to reconstruct the scene of a horror motorcycle crash on Melbourne’s eastern fringes that killed one man and left another fighting for life.

Andrew Whitlock, 22, fronted the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday for a filing hearing.

The Mooroolbark man has been charged with culpable driving causing death, negligently causing serious injury, reckless conduct endangering life and other driving charges after the crash at Powelltown on January 8.

Police will allege the young man was riding at high speeds with a 23-year-old Northcote man on Yarra Junction-Noojee Rd.

The Northcote man was involved in a head-on collision with an unrelated motorcyclist at 1.30pm.

The 23-year-old rider died at the scene and a 77-year-old Croydon man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Mr Whitlock was not injured in the collision.

The court heard detectives will take up to 12 weeks to prepare the police brief for the case, which will include experts reconstructing the crash scene.

Mr Whitlock will next appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on June 4 for a committal mention.
