A woman pinched a bystander’s skateboard and used it to smash up a man’s car after he and two mates refused to give her a beer on New Year’s Day in Carlton Gardens.

It was the second frightening incident in a fortnight at the park on the fringes on the CBD after two teenagers were held up at knifepoint in December.

Detectives have been told three men were sitting in a car parked near the gardens when the thirsty female approached them and asked for a beer about 2am.

When the men refused she reached into the car and took one before running off into the park.

Leading Senior Constable Adam West said the trio got out of the car and gave chase.

“They caught up with the woman and one of the men started filming her while another member of the group asked for payment or the return of the beverage,” he said.

“The woman then grabbed the phone and refused to return it.”

The men then bartered $100 for the return of the phone and the woman agreed, but as they were returning to the car one of the men grabbed the phone back.
