Watermarc in Greensborough evacuated after chlorine leak

Staff at a popular swimming pool in Greensborough were evacuated this morning as up to 40 firefighters rushed to contain a dangerous chlorine leak. And it’s not the first time it has happened.

A chlorine leak at a popular Greensborough swimming centre triggered an early morning evacuation on Friday.

Melbourne Fire Brigade crews in hazmat suits were called to Watermarc on Flintoff St about 6am after a strong smell of chlorine was reported.

Three centre staff evacuated — no injuries were reported.

Fire crews found the leak in the centre’s plant room, but extra MFB resources were then needed to contain the “difficult” leak.

Police cordoned off the area, while paramedics stood by to assist.

About 40 firefighters helped control the leak and deem the premises safe again.

But it’s not the first time a chlorine leak has caused chaos at the popular aquatic centre after a similar incident occurred in 2013.

In that incident, two users were taken to hospital and 12 others were treated at the scene.

Exposure to chlorine can cause eye, nose and throat irritation and can even cause choking.
