Speeding drivers using Whittlesea’s rural roads like ‘race tracks’

Drivers are still speeding through Whittlesea’s rural roads despite a five-month traffic blitz. And worried police have had enough, warning motorists they will continue to target the reckless offending.

Up to 25 additional traffic patrols were tasked to Whittlesea’s rural roads where police ran a five-month road blitz, Operation Inviolable.

Motorists continuing to use rural roads across Whittlesea like “race tracks” are recklessly flouting the law and endangering lives, worried police say.

It follows a five-month police operation where 202 drivers were slapped with speeding infringements — 24 of those lost their license for three months.

Four vehicles were impounded and 16 criminal chargers were laid during Operation Inviolable, which ran from February to June and involved 25 additional traffic patrols across the municipality.

Whittlesea Sergeant Steven Cuxson said the safety message was still not getting through to drivers.

“It is very disappointing to see drivers are still putting their lives at risk and the lives of others, and not obeying road rules,” he said.

“What’s scarier is drivers are using these rural roads like race tracks — we caught 24 drivers in the excessive speed range.”

A 28-year-old Broadmeadows man was clocked driving at 180km/h in a 100km/h zone in Merriang Rd, Woodstock — he was charged on summons for driving at a dangerous speed.

“This is an example of the sort of behaviour we will not be tolerating on our roads,” Sergeant Cuxson said.

“Speeding is the number one contributor to road trauma on Whittlesea roads and we will continue to crack down on speeding and road safety.”

Police also nabbed 34 drivers for infringements such as driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without a valid license, no seatbelts, disobeying traffic signals and using a mobile phone during the road blitz.
