Truck, cranes needed to land restored W-Class tram in Diamond Creek

The famous W-Class Yarra trams once carried Melburnians across the CBD. But now, a restored vehicle has arrived in Diamond Creek, and will serve a very different purpose to the community.

A restored W-Class tram will operate as a community cafe in Nillumbik Council’s new $2.5 million Diamond Creek regional playspace.

It comes after a truck carried the historic Melbourne vehicle through the city before two cranes lifted it into place on Tuesday.

Nillumbik Mayor Karen Egan said the delivery of the restored tram was an exciting milestone as the “long-awaited” placespace started to take shape.

“It is going to be a fantastic facility for our community to enjoy and a real drawcard for Diamond Creek,” she said.

Diamond Creek Rotary Club will operate the tram as a cafe and president Arthur Lewin said members and volunteers had been working to restore it for the past 18 months.

“It’s amazing to see something that started as a novel idea actually becoming a reality,” he said.

“We hope it becomes a social hub for our community and look forward to seeing people enjoy it.”

The tram was one of 130 retired W-Class Yarra trams given a new home through a joint initiative between Diamond Creek Rotary Club and the State Government.

The playspace, off Main Hurstbridge Rd, is also being funded through the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.
