Extra commuter carparking at Craigieburn station is one step closer with the State Government opening the tender to build the 745 new spots.
The long-awaited carpark will be built along the eastern edge of the Hume Highway and will take the total number of spaces to 1100 – more than double the current capacity.
The carpark – expected to be open by mid-2020 – will be linked to the station by a new footpath.
The plans include lighting, CCTV, multiple entry and exit points and bicycle parking.
A new signalised pedestrian crossing will be built over Potter St so passengers can safely access the station from their vehicles and the pedestrian crossing over the railway line will also be upgraded.
Yuroke state Labor MP Ros Spence said the government had listened to the community’s calls for more parking.
“We have provided some relief with extra spaces on site and on Potter St but this new carpark will deliver significant relief with more than 700 additional spaces for our growing community,” she said.
Construction is expected to start early next year.
The new carpark comes after an online survey in October 2018 that revealed 54 per cent of Craigieburn commuters were parking in neighbouring streets, clogging them up for residents.

The survey also found 84 per cent of 211 participants thought increasing the number of parking spaces was the most important project for the station.
More than 30 new parking spaces at the station opened earlier this year, which followed an extra 123 spots that had been made available since October 2016.
The works are part of the State Government’s $60 million investment to deliver more than 2000 new carparking spaces at busy metropolitan stations.
